There's never a good time for the air conditioning to fail, but the hottest afternoon of the year is the worst. Before you panic, there are a few safe things to check that solve a meaningful share of breakdowns — and some clear steps to keep your household cool and safe until a technician arrives.
First, the safe checks worth trying
Work through these in order. Each is something a homeowner can do safely, and any one of them can get cooling back without a service call:
- Check the thermostat. Confirm it's set to COOL, the setpoint is below the current room temperature, and — for battery models — the batteries are fresh. A blank or frozen screen often just needs new batteries.
- Look at the air filter. A filter clogged after a long cooling season chokes airflow and can ice the system over. If it's dirty, replace it.
- Check the electrical panel. Look for a tripped breaker labeled "AC," "condenser," or "compressor." Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a professional — repeated trips signal an electrical fault, not a fluke.
- Look for ice on the unit. If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, turn the system OFF and run only the fan. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
If it's still not cooling, stay safe while you wait
Heat is a genuine health risk, especially for older adults, young children, and anyone with a medical condition. While you arrange a repair:
- Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows to block radiant heat.
- Run ceiling and box fans, and open windows once the outside air cools in the evening.
- Drink plenty of water and avoid using the oven or other heat-generating appliances.
- If your home becomes dangerously hot, relocate to a cooling center, library, mall, or a friend's home — many communities open cooling centers during heat waves.
When to stop and call a pro tonight
Some situations warrant a call right away rather than more troubleshooting:
- A breaker that re-trips after a single reset.
- A burning or electrical smell — shut the system off at the breaker.
- Ice that returns after a full thaw and a fresh filter, which usually means low refrigerant.
- Anything involving refrigerant. Under U.S. EPA Section 608 rules, refrigerant handling is restricted to certified technicians, and topping it off without finding the leak only masks the problem.
Emergency and same-day availability vary with demand — and on a record-hot day, demand is high everywhere. Calling early in the evening typically gives you a better shot at a same-night or next-morning slot than waiting until midnight. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave the home immediately and call 911 or your gas utility.
